For Unexpected Expenses
Our Rapid Response Program gives us the flexibility to respond when a senior age 60 or older suddenly finds themselves without enough food. Each caller is screened to better understand the situation and determine whether the need is ongoing or the result of a temporary financial setback. When appropriate, we provide enough food to help carry the individual through approximately two weeks, giving them time to recover financially, connect with other resources, or get past the immediate crisis. A broken refrigerator or air-conditioning system, an unexpected medical expense, or another emergency can consume the limited funds a senior had available for groceries. For someone living on a fixed income with little or no savings, even one unexpected expense can mean an empty refrigerator.
Immediate Food Assistance
Sometimes the crisis is equally sudden and unpredictable. One woman who worked from home became seriously ill and was prescribed a new medication that caused severe side effects. Unable to work for nearly a month, she suddenly had no income and no money for food. Through Rapid Response, we can act quickly in situations like these—providing immediate food assistance and helping an older adult through a difficult moment before a temporary setback becomes a deeper crisis.
