Grocery Bag Program
For seniors living at or near the poverty level, the cost of rent or a mortgage, HOA fees, utilities, medications, insurance, and other basic necessities can leave very little room in the budget for food. Even when a senior is receiving nutritious Meals on Wheels dinners, there may still be days when the food available in the home is limited.
Our Grocery Bag Program helps fill that gap. Twice each month, eligible Meals on Wheels clients receive a bag of healthy, shelf-stable food items to supplement the meals they already receive. Bags include nutritious staples such as oatmeal, low-sugar cereal, tuna, canned chicken, and high-protein soups—foods that can provide simple breakfast and lunch options while adding valuable protein and nutrition throughout the day. These additional groceries help seniors keep nourishing food on hand while stretching limited monthly incomes a little further.
For someone living on a fixed income, supplemental groceries can make a meaningful difference. They can reduce the need to choose between buying food and paying another essential expense, help prevent cupboards from becoming bare at the end of the month, and provide greater consistency in a senior’s access to nutritious food. Just as importantly, knowing there is food available in the home can ease some of the worry and uncertainty that comes with food insecurity.
Our goal is not only to provide a meal for today, but to help create greater food security throughout the month. Through our Grocery Bag Program, we are able to provide our most financially vulnerable senior clients with an additional layer of nutritional support—helping them remain healthier, more independent, and more secure in their own homes.
